Splenectonty


Abstract
Splenectomy is frequently performed due to traumatic injuries to the spleen "and hematological disorders. Also splenectomy is done with en-bloc resection in the radical cancer surgery and other conditions. 235 cases of splenectomy were performed for past 12 years from 1962 June, to 1974 in the Severance Hospital and we analysed them. Following results were obtained.
1. In 235 cases, 166 were male and 69 were female. Average age was 39. The youngest was 5 days old baby who was performed splenectomy due to operative trauma during the exploration for idiopathic stomach perforation. The oldest was 75 years old man who was performed .splenectomy combined with radical gastrectomy¢¥ for stomach carcinoma.
2.. Surgical indications for splenectomy in 235 cases were as follow: trauma in 48 cases, operative trauma in 27 cases, en-bloc resection in radical cancer surgery in 96 cases, portal hypertension in 45 cases, hematological disorder in-11 cases and other conditions in 8 cases.
3. Complications after splenectomy developed in 46 cases. Pleural effusion, atelectasis and infection were-common complications.
4. Eight were dead. Causes of death were sepsis in 3 cases, postoperative bleeding in 3 cases, acute renal failure in one case and respiratory failure in one case.
